My Great-Great Grandfather

Some records show John Dingman's middle initial as a "J", others with an "I" and also with an "R".

I am not sure when my great-great grandfather was born; it was in New York circa 1800, per census records. He was married twice, first wife unknown, second wife was Margaret Sart and they had a large family, at least ten children, possibly more.

I have no proof of the parentage of John Dingman. Several Dingman researchers have reported to me that Johns's parents are George and Nancy Halvestat Dingman. John and his wife Margaret name two of their children George and Nancy, so it is possible.

John Dingman died between 1875 and 1880, his wife Margaret died in 1894 according to her tombstone. I don't know when John died or where he is buried, most likely he is buried at Canajoharie Falls Cemetery in Montgomery County, New York, which is where his wife is buried.

John was married twice, first wife's name is unknown at this time. John & his first wife's children were:

Edward born ?

Nancy Catherine, born about 1831

George born about 1833

Abraham/Abram, born May 10, 1836, died July 8, 1917.

John & Margaret's children were the following:

Alexander, born baout 1839.

Polly Ann, born about 1842

Alonzo, born April 1843, died June 9, 1912

James H., born about 1845

Menzo, born about 1852, died 1924

Stewart D. Dingman, born March 20, 1849, died January 03, 1926 in Sprakers, Montgomery County, New York. Stewart is my Great Grandfather.

John and his wife Margaret are living in Canajoharie in the 1850 and 1860 Federal Census with their children. In the 1865 State Census, the family is still living in Canajoharie. The family moves to Root, per the 1870 Federal Census. In the 1875 State Census, John is living with his son Stewart and family. His wife Margaret is not listed, their son Steward is head of the household and some of his brothers and sisters are living with him.

I am doing more research as I don't think my John Dingman died in Charleston.
