He was born at the family home in Miller's Hollow, outside Attalla, AL. He graduated from Alexandria High School in 1965. He married Sandra Crow on Christmas Eve, 1965. He legally adopted her son, Homer Burton, Jr., changing his name to Buddy Glen Oliver. He fathered two children of his own, Scott in 1967 and Dustin in 1981. He worked for his in-laws, Glenis and Mildred Crow, as a payroll clerk at their restaraunt until it closed in 1980. After that, he started working at the Gold Kist chicken processing plant in Albertville, AL, where he remained employed until his 1989 diagnosis with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, better known as Lou Gherig's disease. Harold Ray, a man who had never been in a hospital in his life, died around 2 AM on December 26, 1990, a little over a year after his diagnosis with ALS. He was survived by his wife, three children, one granddaughter, his mother and father-in-law, a brother and sister, four nephews, one niece, and many hundreds of friends and co-workers. His funeral was held at Morgan Funeral Chapel and officiated by Rev. Robert Overstreet, his longtime pastor. He was buried on a cold, rainy December day, and he will never be forgotten by those who knew and loved him.
