David M. Shettles was a son of Joseph Shuttlesworth and Nancy/Polly Hughes.

David married Sarah "Sallie" Nixon in 1820 in Abbeyville District, SC.

David was 5'9" tall; grew up and married in Abbeyville, fathered 15 children; came with his family to Pontotoc Co., MS, settling in the northeast part of the county.

David purchased property in 1854, seven miles from Pontotoc town. He was opposed to secession and the Civil War. He was a Democrat.
