OBIT:

Mrs. Sarah Essex, 85, widow of Thomas Essex, died suddenly last night at 11:45 o'clock at her home in Hope. Death resulted from heart disease. She had been ill of influenza and its after effects for about 12 weeks and was confined to her bed most of the time, but lately had apparently been better. Last night her condition seemed to be much improved until about a half hour before she was stricken. She never rallied.

Mrs. Essex was born February 20, 1847 in Flatrock Township, the daughter of John B. and Sarah Carter, pioneers of the county. On January 7. 1864, she was married to Mr. Essex who passed away four years ago. She was a member of the Methodist Church at Old St. Louis and was an active worker there for many years. She spent all her life in the county and was widely known.

Surviving are four daughters and a son: Mrs. Mary Ray, Mrs. Mattie Harker, Mrs. Bertha Surber, Mrs. Esta Robertson and Albert Essex, all of the vicinity of Hope; 24 grandchildren and 32 great grandchildren; three brothers, John Carter of Morganstown; Thomas and Albert of Florida, and a sister, Mrs. Margaret Drake of Oklahoma.

Funeral services will be held Sunday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock at the Hope Methodist Church, conducted by the Rev. R. Stanley Hendricks, pastor. Burial will be made in the Hope Moravian Church.
