OBITUARY

THE CHARITON LEADER
Chariton, Iowa
Tuesday, June 27, 1950

JOHN HENRY CURTIS

One of Chariton's oldest, best known and highly esteemed citizens passed away early Wednesday morning, June 21, 1950 at the age of 90 years and eight months.

"J.H." will be missed by all who knew him, who admired him for his kindness, thoughtfulness and loyalty to his community.

He was the son of Alfred and Sarah Curtis, and was born near Mt. Vernon, Missouri, October 28, 1859. With his parents he came to Lucas County, Iowa in 1862. He grew to manhood in the vicinity of Chariton.

On March 26, 1881, he was united in marriage to Mary Ellen Proctor. To them 11 children were born: Arthur, Arlington, Lewis, Glen, Jennie Marie, Elizabeth, John, George, Edwin, Dean and Paul.

He learned the broom business from C. O. Perry, and on January 1, 1884, he began making brooms in a small building at the rear of his own residence. With the help of his sons, his little shop grew into a real broom factory.

He was converted and united with the Baptist church in February, 1882, and continued in that faith as an untiring worker for his Master. In these 68 years of membership in the church he held many important offices. He was a deacon for more than 50 years, and also served as trustee, Sunday School superintendent and teacher of a class for many years.

He leaves to mourn his passing eight sons and one daughter, 22 grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren and two nieces, Mrs. Grace Shay, of Portland, Oregon, and Mrs. Bert Kennedy of Arkansas.

He was preceded in death by his loving wife and two children, Arthur and Elizabeth.

The community has lost a splendid citizen in the passing of Mr. J. H. Curtis.
