John Christian Hope was born in Liberty Co., GA to Cecelia/Celia (?) and William Hope, Sr. In the 1830s, he along with his three brothers (William, Jr., Henry and David) moved to Alachua Co., Territory of Florida. There, they participated in the Florida Militia during the Second Seminole Indian War (1835-1842). They each received Armed Occupation Act of 1842 Land Permits for 160 acres of land south of Alachua Co. John did not prove out his AOA land, instead moved to Texas.
