Title: Pioneer Dies at Age of 90
Mrs. Mary Jane Snyder, who had attained the great age of 90 years and came to Delaware county when she was a child of five years, died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. John Carradus, on Union avenue in this city, Sunday, Jan. 6, 1946, after a long period of invalidism. Services for Mrs. Snyder will be held at the Shelly funeral home tomorrow (Wednesday) afternoon at 2:00 o'clock, the Rev. Charles E. Mason officiating, with burial at Silver Creek .
Mary Jane Arnold was a daughter of the late Hiram and Rebecca King Arnold and was born in Pennsylvania April 1, 1855. In her infancy the family came to this county and located in Union township, where she grew to young womanhood and was married in 1874 to James Hamilton, and to them were born eight children, four of whom survive. In 1901 she married John W. Snyder, who died March 17, 1942, and for years prior to his death they were engaged in farming northwest of Manchester. Since that event Mrs. Snyder had resided with the daughter here, where she was given the kindest and most affectionate care.
Surviving the nonagenarian are a son and three daughters: James Ray Hamilton of Jesup, Iowa; Mrs. Gail Wilson of Vancouver, B. C.; Mrs. Samuel Rowe of Osceola, Wis.; and Mrs. Carradus. She also leaves two brothers, Fred Arnold of Manchester and Albert Arnold of Hopkinton, now in California, a half sister, Mrs. H. L. Rann of this city, 9 grandchildren and 15 great grandchildren. Mrs. Snyder was preceded in death by her husband, four children and ten brothers and sisters. She had long been a member of the Methodist church, and throughout her long life she impressed all who knew her as a devoted wife and mother, a good neighbor and a true friend.
