Edgar Bird Dies: An A.C. Pioneer

Long-time Resident Here Succumbs in Wichita; Services To Be Held Here Sunday.

Edgar Milton (Ed) Bird, 86, a pioneer resident of Arkansas City, died Friday night in a Wichita hospital. Mr. Bird had been living with a daughter, Mrs. Earl Roach in Wichita for several months and was in the hospital about three days. He had been in ill health for several years however.

Two other daughters, Mrs. Bess Stewart, Arkansas City and Mrs. Ann Eldridge, Chillicothe, Ill.; two grandsons, Jess Stewart, San Francisco, and Billy Stewart, Oklahoma City, survive him. The body was brought to Arkansas City Saturday.

Funeral services will be held at 4 o'clock Sunday afternoon in the Oldroyd chapel. The Rev. Carlton A. Clark, rector of the Trinity Episcopal church, will officiate. Interment will be in Riverview cemetery.

Ed Bird, as he was known in Arkansas City for many years, came here in 1870, with his father, the late Capt. T.C. Bird, a Civil War veteran, and the two men operated a meat market in this city for many years. Mr. Bird first settled on land east of the city and later moved into the city. At one time he owned considerable real estate in Arkansas City. Mr. Bird came to Cowley county from Iowa, making the trip in a covered wagon.

Mr. Bird had the distinction of never having worn an overcoat and he had often said he did not care to be hampered in walking and working with an overcoat on. He was a member of the First Baptist church.
