After high school, she attended nearly 2 years at the University of Wyoming for secretarial work. When the family could no longer afford for her to attend college, she secured a job working for the Veteran's Affairs Department in Washington DC. Her brother, Frank Jr., helped her to secure this job and was a support system to her while there. She boarded the Wyoming and North Western Railroad line train in Lander, Wyoming in the early 1940's. This was quite the feat as she did this ALONE as a single woman in the 40's. Pretty impressive by today's standard and especially so back then. She lived in Washington DC for 12 years and supported herself with a successful career.
She was able to secure a transfer to Cheyenne, Wyoming in the mid-late 1950's. The family had since moved to Cheyenne and established the new family home at 1010 E 19th St. She transferred to Cheyenne to be close to her family. She met her future husband and love of her life, Richard Frank "Dick" Schum while working at the VA. He was the senior administrator and she his secretary. The were both later on in life for love and finally found one another. Neither has ever before been married. They were married in Cheyenne, Wyoming. Together they were blessed with two children. Lori was adopted in 1958 and, after believing they could not conceive, were surprised by the pregnancy and birth of Rick in 1959.
The two were the most loving and devoted parents. They provided their children with a childhood rich with experiences, family and love. Mary was the most devoted mother and was the kindest woman.
After a short battle with lung cancer, Mary passed away in 1987 at far too young an age. She lived an exceptional life marked by grace and strength. She is loved dearly by her children and grandchildren and remembered daily.
