Coach W. Elmer Barbour, 74, of 24 Indian Ave., died February 10, 1993, in his residence.
Coach Barbour was born in Rocky Mount, N.C., was the widower of Lois Hollingsworth Barbour, and retired June 1, 1992, as Co-ordinator of Driver Education with the Virginia Beach School System.
He played professional football with the New York Giants in 1945; from 1946-47 with the Pittsburgh Steelers; for nine years he coached football at Durham High School in Durham, N.C.; then for two years was assistant football coach at the University of South Carolina; then for two years was assistant football coach at Wake Forest University; and from 1963 until 1970 was head coach at Cox High School in Virginia Beach.
He is survived by two sons, Major Wesley E. Barbour Jr. of Middletown, R.I., and William B. Barbour of Virginia Beach; one sister, Mary Pate of Moore, Okla.; and one granddaughter, Holly E. Barbour of Rhode Island.
A funeral service will be conducted Saturday, Feb. 13th at 11 a.m. in Maestas Funeral Home Baltic Ave. Chapel by the Rev. Edward S. Martin Jr. Burial will be in Princess Anne Memorial Park.
The family will be at the funeral home Friday night from 7:30 p.m. until 8:30 p.m. Memorial donations may be made to the American Heart Association, 360 Southport Circle, Suite 104, Virginia Beach 23452.
