Former Resident Of Princeville Dies In Urbana Home

Mrs. Lydia Chapman Auten Armstrong, a native of Princeville, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Edward Auten, Sr., died at her home in Urbana Sunday morning February 20. She had been in failing health for several months. Funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon in the First Universalist Church in Urbana. Burial was in the family lot in Mt. Hope Cemetery, Urbana. Rev. Earl Engle, pastor of the church, was in charge of the services.
Lydia Chapman Auten was born in Princeville, August 1, 1872, the next oldest of nine children. She was 76 at the time of her death. She attended Princeville Academy and was graduated in 1895 from Wellesley college in Wellesley, Mass. She taught a few years and was married to James Ellis Armstrong in 1899.
They had four children, all of whom are living: Grace (Mrs. William Olson) of Chicago, Ralph of Neptune, N. J., Agnes of Milwaukee, and Alice at home in Urbana.
She is survived by one grandson, Alvin Olson, a senior at the University of Illinois and by five brothers and one sister: Benjamin C. Auten of Carterville, Mo., Peter Auten of Urbana, Edward Auten, Jr., of Princeville, Charles Auten of Glen Ellyn, Louis Auten of Denver Colo., and Miss Sarah Auten of Princeville, Mrs. Armstrong was preceded in death by an infant brother Lemuel, by her husband in 1947 and by her sister, Nellie Auten, in September 1948.
