Edward Auten, Jr., passed away Monday night, May 13, 1974, in the White Billet Nursing Home in Hatboro, Pa., where he had been a patient several months. A recent fall and stay in a nearby hospital had further depleted his strength.
Mr. Auten was born September 10, 1881, in Princeville the son of Edward Sr. and Maria Cutter Auten. He married Alice Chapin in 1907 and she preceded him in death.
Surviving are one son, Dr. Robert Auten of Tokyo, Japan, and one daughter, Mrs. James (Mary) Rainey of Abington, Pa., two brothers, Charles of Western Springs, and Louis of Denver, Colo., three grandchildren; and one great-grandson.
Graveside services will be held at 10 a.m. Friday in Princeville Cemetery with Rev. Robert Spencer officiating.
Arrangements here are by the Bouton-Hammitt Funeral Home.
Mr. Auten was a graduate of Harvard University in the class of 1904, served as Presbyterian church organist for many, many years, composing special Easter music and for other occasions during his tenurs and was world famous as a peony hybridizer.
The Auten Peony Fields, located on Route 91 north of town encompassed several acres of the fragrant and elegant flowers which drew crowds from many nearby cities and states and other countries, and rated testimony in many publications to Mr. Auten's skill in hybridizing.
This facet of his life was reluctantly abandoned when his health and that of several longtime assistants failed. He was also proud of many huge and beautiful hybrid iris strains and lilacs, but peonies were his great love and pride.
No sketch of Mr. Auten's life could close without mention of his many poems, warm and honest comment and tribute to his home, family, and love of life
