German spelling is Starz, American spelling is Startz; a descendent of the Johann F. Starz line from Fachsenfeld, Germany. (Johann Starz was born in Fachsenfeld but likely grew up in Heilbronn/Stockheim; connected with both areas of southwest Germany.) Startz lineage: Johann and family born from southwest Germany, then Ludwig Carl (Louis Charles) born west of New Braunfels, Texas, then Emil Lawrence born in San Saba, Texas, then Clarence Eldon born in San Saba, Texas. Then Clarence's son Lawrence (only child) had two son's David and Paul.

The original Johann Startz family immigrated to Galvaston, The Republic of Texas, on November 23, 1844. Johann was a "First Founder" of the new German community/town of New Braunfels, Texas in 1845. Johann was a citizen of the Republic of Texas; sons Louis and Emil and Clarence are "Sons of Texas".

Clarence was born to Emil Lawrence Startz and Macie Linda (McCarly) Startz on 9/26/1911 in San Saba, TX. Emil and Macie are buried adjacent to Clarence's first wife Maxine Startz in Memory Lane Cemetery, Anadarko, Oklahoma. The graves are located 300 feet northwest of the hugh brown Mausoleum. Emil's parents: Louis(Ludwig) Charles(Carl)Startz and Mary Jane Holman Startz, buried in Wallace Creek Cemetery, TX. Clarence's brother: Thomas Neal b.1/10/14 d.5/5/98 Memory Lane in Anadarko, OK, located extreme east-center side. Brother: Carlie Taylor Startz b.9/17/1916 d. 1/1/1976 of cancer, Resurrection Memorial Cemetery in Oklahoma City. Sister: Vadena Earline Hickman b.3/6/1919 d.1/1/1996 Fairlawn Cemetery, Chickasha, OK, located northeast of the cemetery.

A few notes about all of these siblings, three boys and one girl, they remained very close throughout their lives. Perhaps this tight bond was because their mother died when they were young, Clarence was on 12 when Macie died. Many family photos show Clarence and his brother Tom together. Typically, Clarence has a big belly and is holding a cigarette. I think my grandfather Clarence was always a nervous/energetic man, always ready to go. He enjoyed watching professional wrestling. He drank Coors beer, adding salt into the can. Don't remembering him taking vacations or other time off, he was always working-driving one of his buses. He was a modestly successful businessman. He began his main career in driving dump trucks. He always said he doesn't miss the good old days; those old days were not good, a harsh life. He started driving a bus between Oklahoma City and Lawton, OK where the Fort Sill army base was located; where there were always a steady stream of soldiers to haul back and forth to Oklahoma City. I believe he worked for the Oklahoma Transportation Company. He earned many "one million mile" safe driving awards. Clarence's dream had always been to own his own bus line. He eventually did own a small bus line, a couple buses I guess, a couple drivers. He continued to drive a bus on a nearly daily basis until his eye sight weakened from macular degeneration at age 74. His second wife "Ima" helped run the business for decades.

First wife: married in 12/23/1931 to Maxine Thelma (McNeal) Startz b.1/25/1913 d.9/18/1986 Memory Lane Anadarko, OK. Married second wife on 10/16/1986 to Ima Love Fenter b.10/18/1919 d.9/11/1993 Mountain view Cemetery, OK. Son from Maxine: Lawrence Eldon Startz b.12/31/1932 d.8/31/2002 Fairlawn in Chickasha,OK. Clarence Grandsons: Paul and David.

My grandparents were Clarence and Maxine Startz who lived in Chickasha, OK. They married 12/23/1931. Their only child was my father, Lawrence, who grew up in Chickasha. Clarence operated his own small bus line from Chickasha to Lawton and Altus, OK, for the Oklahoma Transportation Company. He continued to drive his bus route until he was about 75 yo. Well, Maxine lived in Chickasha while Clarence was working alllll the time. When Maxine passed in 1986, it turns out that Clarence had remained married to Maxine but actually lived with Ima Love Fenter for 50 plus years. Though Clarence never divorced my grandmother, Maxine Startz, Clarence and Ima lived as a "married couple" most of their adult lives in Altus. Their neighbors in Altus knew them as a married couple. I think it is just amazing that Clarence and Ima lived together for so many years in a loving relationship and the rest of the Startz family never really knew about it, or at least no one ever said anything. But Clarence always supported my grandmother Maxine, and I will always be appreciative of this aspect of my grandfather.

After Maxine passed in 1986, Clarence and Ima married quickly after, they had little time left. I immediately accepted my new step grandmother and never held anything against Ima or my grandfather. At their age, and Ima's emphysema, with her very limited time left, I felt compelled to accept and support them both and their relationship as my new family. Ima, a person who had always been there in the background, someone who knew my brother an I so well through my grandfather, someone who I never knew was there. Ima was a very sweet woman, and I grew to really like and respect her. You probably could have written a book about this life-long double relationship. Clarence was my favorite grandfather by far, he had a wild and fun streak in him. I miss them all so very much.
