Rev. Sherman Isbell said that his grandfather Dr. William Jesse Isbell (1884-1986) showed him John William Isbell's grave. Dr. Isbell was a grandson of Elijah Miller Isbell, nephew of John William and first cousin of Jesse Benjamin who had told William Jesse that the enclosure was his father's grave. "In one area enclosed with a wall of large white stones is the burying place of John Isbell. Grandfather took me to that walled area in the 1960s, and said then and later that it had been identified for him by Jesse William Isbell's son Jesse Benjamin Isbell (1878-1962) as being John Isbell's grave, when Grandfather had visited there years before." He further said, "When Grandfather took me there in the 1960s, I remember him inside the enclosure. He had borrowed a hoe from someone in the area, and was scraping around, in hopes that there might have been an inscribed stone that had fallen down. He was saying, 'Now Uncle John, we're not coming to get you.' He was about eighty, and I was about fifteen."

John Isbell married Sarah Rod(d)en September 1816
in Madison County, then Mississippi Territory (now Alabama). Descendants of this pre-Statehood marriage are eligible for membership in First Families of Alabama (Alabama Genealogical Society).

License dated 19 Sept. 1816, Madison County Marriage Book Vol. 1 p. 269.

Jackson Co., AL. Will Book 6, pp.170-72, records their living descendants (estate of Zachariah Isbell): "That John Isbell a deceased brother of decedent left him surviving and as entitled to distribution in said estate his five children Jesse W. & Miller Isbell and Mary Allen, Margaret Latham & Jane Minnix, five grandchildren…"(then lists) 5 grandchildren by his deceased son Levi, two children of deceased daughter Minerva Latham, and one by daughter Lavinia Wright. (Isbell Country by Odessa Isbell, p.15)

The Scottsboro DAILY SENTINEL, June 11, 1972, p.6: "The McAllister Sinks or Cove was partly an Indian field when the white man came. David Berry settled it. He sold it to John Isbell, who cleared the remainder of the Sinks with Negro slave labor. Mr. Isbell's three daughters inherited it: Mrs. Wm. Latham, Mrs. W.M. Minnix, and Mrs. B.B. Allen. A.E. McAllister purchased the Sinks from these heirs."
