Note about date of birth: He actually did not know his exact date of birth, and there are no reliable existing records of it. His mother died when he was five, and his father wasn't sure about the date. So, based on information received from neighbors and other family members, he "chose" the date of 11 Aug 1885 and maintained that date as his date of birth for his entire life. His brother, Hyancle Shelton ("Hoss") Phillips faced a similar situation. He "chose" the date of 4 Jul 1886. One of the "chosen" dates, or perhaps both, is likely incorrect since there are less than eleven months between the two dates. (Bill Leflar)
