Alvin "Boss" Columbus was the son of Mary Lunsford and Jim Lunsford. His first marriage was to Cordia Money. Cordia passed away in 1930 shortly after the birth of their last child--a stillborn, premature daughter.

His second marriage was to Etta Prevette. They were separated at the time of his death. He passed away from pneumonia secondary to a right hip fracture while he was a patient at Broughton Hospital in Morganton, NC with encephalomalacia or "softening of the brain."
