Arthur H Smith Dies At Age 83
Former Moro Correspondent of Telegraph
The oldest former member of the Alton Telegraph staff, Arthur Hayes Smith, died Saturday afternoon at 4 o'clock in Alton Memorial Hospital where he had been since Friday. His illness began four weeks ago. He was never a full-time staff member but for many years before and after the turn of the century he had been the Telegraph reported at Moro, and his letters covered the comings and going and the doings of the Moro people over a wide span of years. He contributed to the Telegraph columns even in the later years of his life and his frequent visits to the Telegraph office and oft-given suggestions or comments were highly valued by the present-day management of the Telegraph.
He was born on a farm in Moro Township, the child of Mr and Mrs Harvey Smith and he lived on that farm until 12 years ago when he moved to East Alton to be at the home of his daughter, Mrs Henry Lawrence. He would have been 83 years old Sept 23. The whole of his life he spent in Madison County and infrequently was out of the county. He had been an active leader in church work in whatever community he lived. His marriage to Della Yager took place in 1898. She died 19 years ago. Besides the children, he leaves two sisters.
The body was at the Marks funeral home until noon today when it was taken to East Alton Baptist Church where services were conducted this afternoon at 2 o'clock by the Rev L B Walkington of East Alton Methodist Church, assisted by the Rev William Bohn, pastor of the church where the services were held.
Interment was in the Moro cemetery.
