"Lorenz Stahl Taken By Death
Lorenz Stahl, a resident of Gretna for 42 years and of Sarpy county for 50 years, passed away unexpectedly Friday afternoon. Had he lived until October, he would have been 90 years of age.
Mr. Stahl was born in Tondern, Schleswig Holstein, . October 11, 1855. There he was baptized, confirmed and educated in the Lutheran faith.
In 1874 he came to this country, settling in St. Louis, Mo., where he married Ingeburg Lorenzen, also of Tondern. During the following years, the young couple moved from St. Louis to Denver and then to Omaha.
In 1895, Mr. and Mrs. Stahl and their son, Henry, located on a farm north of Gretna where they lived until 1903. they then moved to Gretna where Mr. Stahl managed the Gretna elevator for 11 years.
In December 1907 he lost his wife after 25 years of married life. In September, 1909, he married Miss Agnes Denker of Elkhorn. To this union one son was born, Lorenz C.
In 1918 his son, Henry, lost his wife, and Mr. and Mrs. Stahl opened their home and hearts to his daughter, Eleanor, who lived with them until her marriage in 1936.
Except for an attack of rheumatism which forced his retirement, he enjoyed excellent health, hardly knowing a sick day in his life.
Gracious and sympathetic, generous and charitable to a fault, he was a devoted husband and a kind and understanding father.
As a citizen of Gretna, he was active in civic affairs, serving as town marshal and mayor, and was also a member of the town board for many years.
Lorenz Stahl was a charter member of the Resurrection Lutheran church, serving as a councilman for a number of years. He was faithful to the church, attending with a great degree of regularity under the last few years when his age made it difficult to attend.
On Friday after taking his walk to the post office for the mail, he took his usual nap. On awakening he complained of a severe headache. A few moments later he had passed quietly away.
He is mourned by his wife, Agnes; his sons, Henry and Lorenz; five grandchildren and two great grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Monday afternoon at the resurrection Lutheran church with the pastor Rev. Paul Moseener, in charge. Music was furnished by the choir who sang "In The Garden" and "Rock of Ages".
Interment was in Mount Auburn cemetery.
The pallbearers, all relatives of Mr. Stahl, were Langdon Stahl, Omaha, Kenneth Stahl, and T.E. Denker, Elkhorn, C. Henry Denker, Waterloo, Henry Risley, Ralston and Carl Schrum of Springfield.
Attending from out of town were Mrs. Mary Ohrt, Miss Mary Mae Murphy, Tom Connor, Omaha, Mrs. Julia Werner, Sheboygan, Wis., and many others from all the surrounding towns."
