Obituary - 28 Mar 1919 - Gretna Breeze
Last Thursday evening about 6 o'clock as John Stahl was going home from work he had an attack of heart failure in front of Roy Langdon's garage and fell. The boys at the garage carried him into the office, called a doctor and his relatives, but Death had already put its mark upon him, and he died in a few minutes. The remains were taken to his late home. Funeral services were held Sunday afternoon at the Lutheran church, being conducted by Rev. H.F. Schmidt. The church could not hold all the people who were present to pay their last respects to the memory of the deceased. Burial was made in the LaBorde cemetery. John Neilsen Stahl was born July 18, 1851, in Schleswig Holstein. He came to St. Louis at the age of 19 and lived there for 21 years. In 1892 he moved to Denver and lived there four years. In 1896 he came to Nebraska and engaged in farming for 13 years. Eleven years ago he moved to Gretna and became assistant manager of the Gretna elevator, where he worked up to his death. He was married to Mrs. Pauline Wood January 17, 1904. John Stahl was a charter member of the Lutheran church in Gretna and was always active in building it up. He leaves his widow, two brothers, Lorenz Stahl of Gretna, Henry Stahl of Denver, and two sisters, Mrs. August Prinz of Chalco and Mrs. Henry Hamann of Omaha, and a large number of other relatives and friends to mourn his loss.
