A Destroyer Escort, the U.S.S. Key, has been named for the late Captain Key, a Marine flyer killed in battle of Tulagi Bay in the Solomons.

The escort vessel was launched at Orange by the Consolidated Steel Corporation on February 22, one of two such vessels, the other being named the Traw.

Mrs. Ira F. Key, mother of the late Captain Key, was sponsor at the launching of the vessel named for her son. Rev. Ira F. Key was former pastor of the Methodist church in Cameron. The family now live at Bryan. Rev. Key died over a year ago.

Captain Key was born and reared in Cameron [in Milam County] and was on the book review staff of the Dallas Times-Herald before entering the Marine air service. He was killed on August 7, 1942. The body of the lost flyer was never recovered. Cameron Herald, February 17, 1944
