Gerrit Lansing enlisted in Company E of the 10th Regiment of the Wisconsin Volunteers in 1861, with his older brother John. The two brothers were in many battles during the early part of the war. On 20 September 1863, Garret and John were both captured and imprisoned. They probably spent time in Libby prison in Richmond, Virginia, and in early 1864, they were transferred to Andersonville prison in Georgia. During the summer of 1864, prisoners were dying by the scores from heat, starvation, and infectious disease among a host of reasons. Gerrit finally succumbed to the ravages of prison and died August 23, 1864, listed as cause: dysentery and scurvy. He is buried at the Andersonville National Cemetery.
