The Breece family is of Welsh origin and was founded in Philadelphia at the time William Penn established the colony which was named in his honor. Adam and Eliza Breece, leaving Pennsylvania, removed to Loudoun County, Virginia where they raised the majority of their family. Then in 1836 the family moved to Ohio and in 1837 purchased property in the Jackson Township of Knox County. In 1838 Eliza died followed by Adam in 1839. With the death of both parents, the family of 13 children became divided. The older children found work where they could and seven of the youngest were given gardianships with various households by the Mount Vernon court in April of 1839.
