James Magoffin Dwyer was one of seven children born to Judge Joseph E Dwyer and Annette Magoffin. He was the grandson of James Wiley Magoffin, a war hero and founder of El Paso. Also grandson of Mariana Leal, Canary Islander.

James married Florence Francis French on April 28th 1894 in El Paso. They had four children, James Jr., Samuel J., Florence, and Earl P.

It is not known why James left his family in El Paso and moved back to San Antonio but shortly after his youngest son was born he married Agnes Hall. James and Agnes had two sons Edward Hall, and Timothy Hall. 11 days after the birth of Timothy in 1914 his wife Agnes died.

Around 1918 he married Margaret Amanda Bishop they lived happily married until his death in 1953.

Obituary in the San Antonio Express read,

Dwyer - James M. Dwyer, 80, 423 Chicago Blvd., died Wednesday, Dec. 23. Survived by widow, Mrs. Margaret Bishop Dwyer; son, Edward H. Dwyer; sister, Mrs. Gertrude Leighton and grandson, Edward H. Dwyer Jr. Rosary Friday 7:30 p.m. Funeral Saturday 8:45 a.m, from Zizik-Kearns Funeral Home and 9 a.m. at San Fernando Cathedral, with Requiem Mass to be offered by Rev'. Peter Caballer. Pallbearers will be, Sam J. Dwyer, Fred C. Dwyer. G. R. Dwyer, Mark E. Dwyer, A. D. Dwyer and C. M. Dwyer. Interment in San Fernando Archdiocesan Cemetery. Arrangements by Zizik-Kearns Funeral Home.
