According to his niece, Oakley died of typhoid fever. He was single. Oakley died within two weeks of his mother.

Oakley was first buried at Springhill Cemetery. His sister Etta must have made the decision to move him to Mt. Olivet three years later to the same lot as the one in which she buried their mother in 1916.
