Robert Rufus Ryman, was the son of Milton F. Ryman and Mary Ellen (Bosworth) Ryman. He was born in Nashville to a family that served the river city as policemen and firemen, and steamboat masters and mates on the mighty Cumberland River. Carrying on the family traditions of public servitude and life on the river, Robert, or "Shorty" as he was called, enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1916 for four years. He served on various ships that protected European ports. Following his tour of duty, he returned to Nashville with his Croatian bride Katarina and their first-born daughter. Three more daughters were to join the family. May you rest in peace, Grandfather.
