James was the son of William Vanderpool and Mary Fuson-Vanderpool. He moved to the Jasper area in 1856, where he was a farmer, blacksmith and goods seller.

During the Civil War he enlisted in the Arkansas Volunteers and became a Captain of an Infantry Company. For the rest of his life, he was known as "Captain Jimmy".
