Enlisted in Company F, California 3rd Infantry Regiment on 26 Sep 1861. Mustered out on 04 Oct 1864 at Camp Douglas, UT.

Johann Anwater was born in Prussia (Germany) where he trained as a shoemaker. He came to the United States from Prussia with his brother Karl. He enlisted as private John Anwater for service during the War with Mexico. After the war he settled in California. When the Civil War broke out, John enlisted as a private at Copperopolis, Calaveras County, California, September 25, 1861, and was mustered into Company F, 3rd California Infantry. Private Anwater was posted to Utah Territory where he was mustered out at Camp Douglas October 4, 1864 (Orton, 571). After the war John filed for a Civil War veteran's disability pension in California December 10, 1866, and received application No. 119,820 and certificate No. 79,532. He was admitted to the Veterans' Home of California at Yountville April 12, 1892, and remained at the home until his death the following year. John Anwater was buried in the veterans' home cemetery, where his brother Charles Anwater is also buried.
