Karl Anwater was born in Prussia (Germany) where he trained as a shoemaker. He came to the United States from Prussia with his brother Johann and settled in California. When the Civil War broke out, he enlisted as private Charles Anwater at Copperopolis, Calaveras County, California, September 25, 1861, and was mustered into Company F, 3rd California Infantry. Private Anwater was posted to Utah Territory where he was mustered out at Camp Douglas October 4, 1864 (Orton, 571). After the war Charles enlisted as a private in the Regular Army at ..., Oregon, January 23, 1867, for a term of three years. Private Anwater was mustered into the Ordnance Corps and posted to Solano County, California, where he appears as a registered voter (1868 Solano Great Register). Private Anwater was mustered out at Benicia Arsenal, California, January 22, 1870. Charles was admitted to the Veterans' Home of California at Yountville November 14, 1884, where he filed for a Civil War veteran's pension July 23, 1890, and received application No. 877,710 and certificate No. 681,869. Charles remained at the home until his death in 1895. Charles Anwater was buried in the veterans' home cemetery, where his brother John Anwater is also buried.
