Served on the USS Alabama during WWI. The story goes that after he was assigned to the Alabama an officer ordered all enlistees to form a line. He then began to rant about the Irish race, saying among other things that they are so ashamed to be Irish they would not identify themselves as such and that if there were any Irish in the line they would not step forward. Leo and several others stepped forward. The officer then said that anyone who would step forward after such a tirade had what it took to be a fireman on a ship.

Served on the USS Palawan during WWII as a dentist.

Husband of Mabel Josephine Erckert Donaldson.
