At the beginning of the Civil War, John enlisted on 13 October 1861, in Company I, 49th Ohio Regiment, but was discharged 24 June 1862, in Florence, Alabama, due to disability. He later re-enlisted on 21 February 1865, in Company K, 148th Indiana Regiment, and was discharged 5 September 1865. His records describe him as being 5 ft. 11 in. tall, with fair complexion, hazel eyes, and auburn hair. His occupation was described as a farmer.
