He came with his parents to Alabama in 1842. During the Civil War he was a surveyor and was exempted from the Confederate State Army military duty. He married first to Keziah Partin on 14 September 1853 in Bullock County, Alabama. He married second to Susan Spencer on 1 May 1862 in Bullock County, Alabama. He was a school teacher and farmer.

Inscription

His marker was not found upon a visit to this cemetery by Tim Hussey in April 2010. At that time, the cemetery was quite overgrown as well. Gamaliel is probably buried next to his first wife, Keziah, whose marker was located.
