DUNCAN GIDDENS was born in North Carolina in 1808 and was a son of THOMAS GIDDENS, R. S. He moved with his parents to Bulloch County, Georgia, in boyhood, thence with his brother THOMAS and his family, came to Lowndes County (the territory now called Berrien) in 1827-1828. There he married Miss CIVILITY MATHIS, daughter of JOHN MATHIS. She was born in 1808 in Bulloch County and died at the family home in upper Clinch County in 1873. The second marriage of Mr. Giddens was in Brooks County (GA) on February 16, 1878, to Mrs. MARY JOYCE PIKE, a daughter of GARTEN JOYCE of that county and widow of C. L. PIKE; she was born September 23, 1834, and died in Brooks County, GA, on November 26, 1907. There were no children by the second marriage. There were two or three other children not listed below who died in infancy to Duncan and Civility Giddens.

For some years after their marriage the Giddens home was in the Cat Creek section of Lowndes County (GA). He sold out his property there and moved to Clinch County in 1855 where he bought the lands of RICHARD BENNETT consisting of what is now known as the Guest Millpond, and the farm and timber lands. After owning this property and living he traded it to MILES J. GUEST of Ware County (GA), for the latter's plantation and holdings near the present village of Manor in Ware County. This was about 1861. In 1864, Mr. Giddens sold out his Ware County property and moved back to Clinch County and bought the five lots of land where CHARLES STRICKLAND had been living for about twleve or fourteen years, these consisted of Lots Nos. 150, 195, 220, 221, 240 and 242, 7th District. There was a considerable plantation on Lots 195 and 220 seperated by Red Bluff Creek. This property he divided among his children about 1868, except the homeplace on Lot 220. In 1879 he traded this Lot 220 to JESSE HALL for the Hall property where the late JOSEPH P. SMITH lived in Clinch County, some ten miles west of where he had lived. He moved there and farmed until his death two years later, September 8, 1881. His remains were taken back to his old homeplace and buried in the family burying ground on the place, where his first wife and some of the
children were buried.

Mr. Giddens was a Private in Captain LEVI J. KNIGHT'S independent company of Lowndes County Militia in the Indian War in 1838. He served as 1st Lieutenant of the militia in the 664th District of Lowndes County 1834-1840. He was a Justice of the Inferior Court of Clinch County 1854-1856.
