John R. Sink was the third and youngest child of John and Sallie R. (Peterson) Sink, who were married 14 July 1822 in Wilmington, Delaware.

He married Mary M. Story 27 March 1848 in Morgan County, Illinois. They were the parents of 13 children: John Vincent, husband of Mary R. Rousey; George, married to Henrietta S. Overby; James, who married Martha Louise Rimbey; Lydia Ann and Nancy who both died in childhood and are buried in this cemetery; Sarah; Josephine; Charles; Martha; Louise; Henry A.; Ida E. and Eugene.

As a child, John R. moved with his father to Kentucky, and left there at 17 years old to move to Greene County, Illinois. He farmed near Ceres until 1880, when he and Mary took their younger children and moved to St. Clair County, Missouri. Sometime after 1900, John and Mary moved back to Greene County, living with one of their sons near Ceres.
