Elijah devoted his life to textile work. At the time of his death, he was working at Glen Alpine Cotton Mill. He suffered a stroke and died within a short time.
He was survived by his widow Gertrude "Sallie" Whisenant and one son, William Carl; stepmother Betty Fleming; sisters Bertha (Mrs. E.J.) Houck; Lily (Mrs. W.C.) Lowdermilk; Annabelle (Mrs. R.I.) Whisenant; Donnie (Mrs. Russell) Tally; Arlee(Mrs. Clarence) Thornberg; Macie (Mrs. Ted) Price, and Misses Vietta Sateria Fleming and Agnes Edna Fleming; brothers Sam, Charles, Joe, and Robert Fleming.
His funeral service was held at the home of his sister Bertha Fleming Houck, with the Revs. Perry Crouch and W. Kelley Hou(c)k officiating. Pallbearers were Bert Williams, Bud Barber, J.A. Grady, Frank Ross, Gray Lane, and W.O. Franklin.
Burial followed in the Fleming family plot at Forest Hill cemetery, where he joined his father and his brother Will.
