Aunt Christel was my aunt, the wife of mom's elder brother Manfred. A loving mother to her sons and a devoted wife, she often made us smile because of her somewhat distinguised behaviour. Come to that, as a young woman, she had a great similarity with Wallis Simpson - at least from what our family felt.
What I remember vividly was aunt Christel's relationship with granny. For whatever reason, granny gave her a hard time whenever the family got together, we always guessed that this was because this daughter-in-law never flattered her, something granny could not really handle.
When my beloved godfather, her husband Manfred, sadly passed away in May 2006, the whole family was worried, as the two of them had practically never been apart for more than just a day, with the exception of the time when my uncle had his heart surgery.
Mind you, aunt Christel was very brave and seemingly meant to go ahead and make her dead husband proud of herself, so we all hoped that she would stay with us for some time.
I remember that Sunday before her death, my cousin who lives in Cologne called me, asking me to go to Niederseßmar to look after his mother, as she had been complaining about some heart problems. Since he could not reach her via the phone, he was very worried.
To cut a long story short, we found my aunt in the bathroom, she had pain in her chest, so we called an ambulance and she was taken to hospital.
There, however, she fell into a coma and sadly passed away two days later without regaining consciousness.
We are all convinced that my aunt simply could not live without my uncle, the loss of her beloved husband had taken her last energies, and it is a great relief to think that they are reunited in heaven.
