Mabel Virginia Houck (Houk) was the tenth child of Nina Nelson and Kelley Houck. She graduated from high school in 1920 and married Lester J. Deal. Mabel and Les never had any children of their own, but she cared for the children of others. Besides child care, Mabel worked in a greenhouse. But one of her earliest jobs was assisting her father in preparing the dead. One of his jobs was embalmer, and Mabel and her sisters Iris and Nell sometimes helped out in caring for the women before burial. She and little sister Eddie often had a good laugh over the time Eddie fainted upon going into the embalming room.

She loved animals and always had a dog or bird to love. When she "crossed the river" to join her parents, Mabel's budgie Corky was at her bedside. Mabel passed on the memories of a lifetime to the next generations just as her father had done. She could speak of the old days without condemning the present time. She is much missed by her family.
