Latta, Jan. 31. - Elmore Allen, Sr. died here Friday afternoon after a lingering illness of several months duration. Mr. Allen has been in failing health for some time and the end was not unexpected. He was a son of Thompson W. Allen of Marlboro, where he was born on December 10, 1841. As a young man he volunteered in the Confederate army and was a member of the Eighth regiment of South Carolina Volunteers. He went with his regiment to Virginia for service and there suffering with an attack of measles was given up to die, was honorably discharged and sent home. He recovered, however, and made a trip back to Gordonville, Va., to bring home the body of his cousin, James W. Allen, who was killed in a skirmish there. He then volunteered again and was assigned to Sparks' cavalry.

The unanimous verdict of his fellow citizens is that he was a good man and a good citizen.

Mr. Allen married Miss Maria Waters of Charleston more than 50 years ago. He leaves ten children, as follows: Mrs. Joe Galloway of Marion, Samuel Allen of Pensacola, Fla., Bristow Allen of Dothan, Ala., Lee Allen of Wilmington, N.C., Paul Allen of Charleston, Albert S. Allen, Charles J. Allen, Walker E. Allen, Miss Edna G. Allen and Mrs. Will Reynolds, all of Latta. They were all present at his bedside and funeral, the sons acting as pallbearers.

Mr. Allen was a devoted member of the Baptist church, from which the funeral services were held this afternoon, conducted by Rev. W. C. Allen, pastor. He was also a member of the Masonic fraternity and of the local camp of Confederate Veterans.

Mr. Allen lived in the Brownsville section of Marlboro county, near where he was born, until a few years ago, when he moved to Latta, where he has lived since. The interment was in Magnolia cemetery yesterday afternoon.
