Nelle Kate Broome Milner was born April 1, 1914 to Leroy Floyd Broome and Anna Lee Smith Broome, in Douglasville, Georgia. She was the youngest child, one of eight children. She was known as "Nelle Kate", pronounced 'Nellie' but her name was Nelle, no "ie" in it. Her siblings included five girls and three boys: Miss Pearl Broome (1888-1905); Rev. Carl Jackson Broome (1890-1985); Mr. Floyd Lee Broome (1892-1963); Miss Clyde Broome (1895-1898), Mrs. Burma Marion Broome Chaffin (1898-1992), Mrs. Maude Reba Broome Chapman (1911-1987), Mrs. Gladys Jessee Broome Kenney (1905-1930). Her daddy, Leroy, died in 1918, when she was almost four years old. After his death, her Mother, Anna, and Nelle lived with each of her older siblings and their families at various times. Nelle graduated at age 17, in June 1931, from Ware County HS in Waycross, Georgia where they were living with her sister Burma B. Chaffin, during her last few years of high school. After graduation they moved to their first 'home' together, just the two of them, to the then brand new Techwood Apartments near Ga Tech in Atlanta GA. She got a job to support them and enrolled in the Atlanta Opportunity School at night. Upon graduation from secretarial school, she was employed by The Hartford Insurance Company where she met her husband, H. Morgan Milner, Sr. They were married on October 19, 1940. They had five children, all still living as of the writing of this memorial, plus ten grandchildren and so far, ten great grandchildren. Nelle was a stay at home mother from 1942-1967. She was employed by the Home Mission Board, SBC, for twelve years prior to her retirement. She loved the Lord and all His people. Nelle had a beautiful smile and a loving heart. She played the piano 'by ear' and entertained folks with her renditions of 'the boogie woogie' and some 1940's era music she learned while taking lessons as an adult, along with the hymns she loved, most of all. Hearing Nelle play is a treasured memory of all who knew her well. She loved to visit family and travel when the opportunity arose. She taught a Ladies' Bible study (Sunday School) for many years, in the churches they were members of in each place they lived which included Atlanta; Reidsville, Sparta, Zebulon; Carrollton, Villa Rica, Macon and Decatur Georgia. She was born on April Fool's day and loved to tease folks about that fact. She also quipped about her maiden name, Broome, referring to the fact that before she married at age 26, that she had swept many a young fellow off his feet, but ended up being swept off her own feet when she met her husband in 1940 to whome she was married 46 years at the time of her death. She died at Dekalb Hospital in Decatur Georgia of a myocardial infarction brought on by repiratory infection. She died on a Sunday and was laid to rest on the following Tuesday. The church was packed with those who knew and loved this fine woman that I was blessed to call Mother. I miss her to this day, March 31, 2016, thirty years almost since her leaving this earth for her heavenly home where I will see her again one day, when our Lord and Saviour calls me home. (Written by her middle child)
