The funeral will be at 3 p.m. Tuesday [18 Jun 1985] at Clough-Pearson Funeral Home in Blackshear with burial at Blackshear Cemetery.
The Rev. Broome was former owner of the Brantley Enterprise, the Pearson Tribune, the Blackshear Times, the Alma Times and the Cuthbert Times. Before he went into the newspaper business, he was a public school teacher and principal, as well as pastor of churches in more than 100 Georgia counties.
Carl Jackson Broome was born Aug. 12, 1890, in Carroll County. He was a graduate of Young Harris College and Mercer University, where he was editor of the Mercer Cluster from 1921 to 1922. He then became a teacher and principal of two Jasper County schools, Old Rocky Creek and Eudora schools, which are now defunct.
He maried Exie "Lurline" Cunard in 1917. She died in 1981 at the age of 86.
The Rev. Broome served as mayor of Nahunta in 1952 and 1953. He later owned several newspapers and eventually sold all but the Brantley Enterprise to his sons. He owned the Brantley Enterprise from 1938 until he retired in 1969.
He was a member of the Brantley Community Democratic Executive Committee and belonged to the Georgia Press Association and the Masons.
Surviving are four sons, Dean Broome of Blackshear, Sherwood Broome of Live Oak, Fla., C.J. Broome of Waycross and Linton Broome of Chamblee; a daughter, Mrs. Marjorie Stephens of Atlanta; three sisters, Mrs. Burma Chafin of Waycross – and Mrs. Maude Chapman and Mrs. Nelle Milner, both of Atlanta.
