Mabel Denton Proffitt, age 90, of Cosby, passed away Tuesday, January 29, 2008, at her home.

She was a member of Pleasant Valley United Methodist Church, and taught school for 35 years in Cocke County Educational Systems, mostly at Cosby Elementary School.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles Proffitt; grandson, Steve Proffitt; parents, John and Nora Denton; brothers Hugh and Fred Denton; son-in-law, Charles Gunter.

She is survived by her children, Pam Proffitt, Elaine Gunter, Jimmie Proffitt and wife Norma, Randy Proffitt and wife Peggy; sister, Esther Thomas; grandchildren, Stacy and James Mousseau, Lance Gunter, Larry and Lori Proffitt, Jerry and Diane Proffitt, Keith Proffitt, Tammie Proffitt, Sandy and Jimmy Large; special great-grandson, J. R. Proffitt, who helped with his Mammaw's care; other great-grandchildren, Andy Proffitt, Becky Proffitt, Tristan Proffitt, Brad Williams and Timmy Proffitt, all of Cosby; special friends, Betty Bryant, of Sevierville; Diane Hurley, of Newport; Bea Mousseau, of Newport; and Elena O'Bryon, of Cosby.

Funeral services will be held 8:00 p.m., Thursday, January 31, 2008, in Manes Funeral Home West Chapel, with Pastor Leroy Morie and Steve Shults officiating.

Burial will be 11:00 a.m., Friday, February 1, 2008, in Denton-Hicks Cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 6-8 pm Thursday prior to the funeral services at Manes Funeral Home West Chapel.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Pleasant Valley United Methodist Church, 3475 Bogard Road, Cosby, TN 37722, c/o James Proffitt.
