Percy Hutchison Brereton was the son of Irish immigrants John and Ann Brereton, who settled in Paterson, New Jersey in the 1850s. Percy was a lieutenant in the U.S. Revenue Cutter Service (later called the U.S. Coast Guard), and probably commanded a vessel. He also served as assistant to the chief of the service.

In Providence, Percy married Mary Averic Heineken Peirce, the daughter of Charles M. Peirce and Amanda Elizabeth Hill. Only one of Percy and Mary's three children survived: Peirce Hill Brereton.
