Jacob Barnitz was ensign in Captain Christian Stokes's Fourth Company, First Battalion, York County Associators, Colonel Michael Swope commanding. In the capture of Fort Washington, November 16, 1776, he was wounded in both legs and taken prisoner, and for fifteen months was confined in New York City. In 1806 one of his legs was amputated from the effects of the old wound. From 1785 to 1824 he served as Recorder of Deeds and Register of York County. He was buried in the cemetery attached to Zion Lutheran Church, York.
Husband of Mary McClean Barnitz, father of Anna Maria I, Congressman/Senator Charles Augustus, Anna Maria II, Rebecca, Lt. Jacob Jr. who fought in the War of 1812, William, George, Samuel, and Alexander. Grandfather of Reverend Alexander McClean Barnitz and Reverend Samuel Bacon Barnitz.

Gravesite Details

All bodies were moved to Prospect Hill Cemetery, but due to a fire there in 1903 no records exist.
