Obituary: Barbara E. Thompson, the subject of this sketch, died at the residence of her son, Jacob Thompson, Nov. 29th, 1887, of Pneumonia. During her last illness, which lasted about 9 days, she bore her suffering with Christian fortitude. No complaints ever escaped her lips, but with a strong faith in God, believing that he doeth all things well, she fearlessly stepped down into the dark valley and grappling with the grim monster, death, fought out the dread battle of death and won the victor’s crown. Mother Thompson gave her husband as an offering upon the altar of her country, away in the South, in an enemy’s country, far from the tender ministrations of his devoted wife and the caresses of his children, he breathed out his life alone so far as relatives were concerned, and bravely the devoted wife took up life’s burden and with a large family of little children looking to her for protection and support she bravely wrestled with the world. Successful in rearing her children she never relaxed her loving care for her loved ones even after they had grown to manhood and womanhood and had families of their own. Mother Thompson was a Christian in the true sense of that term, she brought her religion into her every day life. She told the writer a short time before her death that it made no difference when the summons came she expected to be ready. Her every day walk was a lesson to those around her. Her strong faith in God, who had so mercifully taken care of her and conducted her safely through twenty-five years of lonely life, after she had been deprived of her natural protector, enabled her to rest in peaceful security amid all life’s storms, knowing that the everlasting arms were about her and feeling sure of the promise, “I will never leave thee nor forsake thee.” She leaves five brothers and two sisters and three sons and three daughters, besides hosts of other friends to mourn their loss. But their loss is her eternal gain. She was near 58 years of age, and had been a consistent member of the M. E. Church for nearly 40 years.
