Charles E. Baker
Charles E. Baker, 90, of 1075 Old Harrisburg Road, Gettysburg, formerly of Biglerville, died Sunday, Feb. 24, at Gettysburg Lutheran Home.
Born March 29, 1911 in New Oxford, he was a son of the late Roy S. and Emma Kuhn Baker. He was predeceased by his wife, Esther M. Group Baker on Feb. 17, 2002.
In his younger years he worked as a farmer on the family farm and later owned and operated Baker's Meat Market, Biglerville, along with his wife for 25 years. He served as a meat inspector for the Pa. Department of Agriculture for three years; and also as a meat inspector for the U.S. Dept. of Agriculture for seven years.
An avid deer and bear hunter he also grew and won many prizes with his roses. He was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Biglerville; Biglerville Fire Company for 73 years serving as assistant fire chief, firefighter and ambulance driver; and a past member of the Sons of the American Revolution.
He is survived by two sons, Theodore E. Baker of Gardners and Robert E. Baker of Boiling Springs; two daughters, Lucille J. Gillespy of New Castle and Carolyn I. Garman of Murrysville; 10 grandchildren; 11 great–grandchildren; and a brother, Fred W. Baker of Arendtsville.
He was preceded by two brothers, Leo Baker of Biglerville and Roy Baker Jr. of York; two sisters, Helen King of Gettysburg and Doris Baker of Biglerville.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m., Friday, March 1, from St. Paul's Lutheran Church, 25 Franklin St., Biglerville, with Rev. Eugene H. Moore officiating. Interment will be in Biglerville Cemetery.
There will be no viewing, however; family will receive friends at the church from 10 a.m. until the time of the service Friday.
