Paul was born in Lind, a small farming community in Waupca County, WI. He was the fourth of nine children born to Odelia (Timm) and Adolph Anklam. On September 11, 1913 he married Hattie B. Glaser of Addison, WI. He held variety of jobs. In the 1910 Census, he was a hired man for the Stoltzman family of Greeneville. In 1920 he was a signalman for a railroad in Appleton. IN 1930 he was an Engineer in a meat market, which sounds like good work if you can get it. In 1940 he listed his occupation as a Blacksmith.
