As a child John Silas moved from Tennessee to Dade County, Missouri with his parents. The oldest of fifteen children, his boyhood days were spent attending school and working his father's farm. In 1864 he enlisted in Company I, Fifteenth Missouri Cavalry and served until the close of the Civil War. In 1868 he moved to Butler County, Kansas where he farmed for eighteen years. In May of 1886 he moved his family to Aurora, Lawrence County, Missouri where he opened Wilson Brothers Mercantile with his brother Solomon Hayes Jr. Samuel E. Loy bought out Solomon is 1888, and the firm has since been known at Wilson and Loy. Mr. Wilson served as Lawrence County Sheriff for a term from 1892-1894. He married Sarah Elizabeth Hall August 31, 1865. They have five children: Martha Ann, George Solomon, Sarah Ellender, William Walter, and James Grover. Mr and Mrs Wilson worship in the Baptist Church and he is a member of A.O.U.W.
