George Washington Butler of Jonestown, Miss., planter, civic leader and lifelong resident of Coahoma County, died Sunday night at the Coahoma County Hospital. He was 84. Mr. Butler had been in declining health for several years and became seriously ill last Thursday.

Services were held in the Methodist Church in Jonestown with the Rev. James Holder, pastor, and the Rev. Garland Holloman, minister of the First Methodist Church in Clarksdale, officiating. Burial was in the Jonestown Cemetery

Born near Clover Hill, Miss., Mr Butler moved to Jonestown in 1880. He attended college at Georgetown, Ky. He had been engaged in the planting business since returning from college. He was a member of the Jonestown Methodist Church and was a Mason. He was a former Mayor of Jonestown and a former member of the Coahoma County Board of Supervisors.

He leaves his wife, Mrs. Barbara Salter Butler, and three sons, George W. Butler, Jr., Moss Merseles Butler and David Salter Butler, all of Jonestown.
