Elizabeth Salter Butler, who served as clerk of the Town of Jonestown for 44 years and was a leader in civic and church affairs, died Saturday afternoon at the Greenbough Nursing Home where she had been a patient for several months. She was 89.
Services were held at 11 a.m. on Feb 16, 1970 at the Jonestown Methodist Church, with the Rev. J. H. Holder of Horn Lake and the Rev. Garland Holloman of Tupelo officiating. Burial was
at the Jonestown Cemetery. McInnis-Porter Funeral Home was in charge.
Mrs. Butler was born in New York City and moved to Jonestown as a bride in 1908. Her husband was the late G. W. Butler. They celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in
1958.
The first woman in the state to be elected on a board of aldermen, Mrs. Butler was
Jonestown's town clerk for 44 years until her retirement several years ago. She taught Sunday School at the Jonestown Methodist Church and also served as church secretary-treasurer for
many years.
Mrs Butler was a charter member of the Clarksdale Business and Professional Women's Club. and was also a member of the Jonestown Woman's Club, the Coahoma Woman's Club, the former Zonta Club of Clarksdale, the American Legion Auxiliary and the Clarksdale Chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star.
She leaves three sons George W. Butler Jr., Moss Merseles Butler and David Salter Butler,
all of Jonestown; eight grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
