GOLIAD - Mrs. Merle Gentry Tally, 72, who served as local postmaster from 1948 to 1950, died at 11:15 a.m. Tuesday in a local hospital following a short illness.
Mrs. Tally took over the postmaster job following the death of her husband, James L. Tally Sr., in 1948. He had served in the post 13 years.
Born Oct. 6, 1888, in Rockdale, Mrs. Tally was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, Goliad Reading Club, Goliad Historical Society, and Women of the Church Society.
Funeral services will be conducted at 10 a.m. Thursday at the First Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Dr. R. A. McCurdy officiating. Burial will be in Oak Hill Cemetery under direction of Roy Thomas Funeral Home.
Pallbearers will be Raymond Bego, Alonzo Bego, Robert Johnson, Marion Lesis, Alvin Hildrich and Richard Gibb. All are elders and deacons of the church.
Survivors include two daughters, Mrs. Warner T. Denham of Goliad and Mrs. C. O. Ogden of St. Louis; a son, James L. Tally Jr. of Kingsville; a sister, Mrs. Ruth Meyer of Austin; a brother Bruce Gentry of Glendale, Calif., and seven grandchildren.
