Alexander was the son of Alexander Holbrook and Elizabeth Tompkins. He married Laetitia R Nelson on 26 Feb 1863 in Bureau Co, Illinois. They were the parents of 8 children, 6 living in 1900: Mattie (1864), George (1866), Amy (1867, Amy was a teacher in Council Bluffs, George A. Stavely), Mary Eva (1869), Maude L (1873-1948)and May Viola (1873-1954), Edith Idella (1877), and another son.

The Sac Sun - Thursday , October 3rd, 1907 - The funeral of Alexander Holbrook, whose demise occurred Monday night Sept 23, 1907, was held at the Methodist Episcopal church in this city on Thursday afternoon of last week.

After a brief service at the late home of the decedent at 3, the remains were borne to the church where Rev William Black delivered a funeral discourse. As Mr Holbrook was a veteran of the civil war, the local post of the Grand Army of the Republic and Woodman's Relief Corps attended the funeral.

Among the friends present at the funeral were 3 of the sons-in-law and daughters namely: Mr and Mrs BH Marple of Douglas township; Mr and Mrs George Stavely of Council Bluffs; and Mr and Mrs OR Layton of Eden townships, another daughter Mrs WC Honeycomb of Shellsberg, WI, a brother Jeremiah Holbrook of Princeton, IL; Mrs Holbrooks brother James Nelson of Spring Valley, IL, Mrs Holbrooks brother-in-law and sister Mr and Mrs Gideon Richtmyer of Estherville, Mrs Holbrooks brother and sister-in-law Mr and Mrs JB Nelson of Orr, ND and John Johnson of Eldora, IA, an old neighbor.
